THE EVENT

The 2022 North American Hand Papermakers conference, Activating Materials, focused on pushing the bounds of what kinds of materials could be used in fine art papermaking.

APPROACH

The form of the wordmark visually treats “materials” as building blocks of the concept by stacking abstracted geometric letterforms. The separation of the outline from the fill alludes to the components coming together to create the final work. Since the event would be hosted in Miami, I chose a warm palette inspired by the city’s vibrant energy.

Activating Materials

For digital marketing, the fill of the letterforms can be used as a space to include imagery of unique raw materials. This provides an opportunity to add visual interest and texture in a way that plays on the conference theme, while color overlays make it feel branded.

For event merch, the logo creates a dynamic graphic when used at a large scale. Using only the outline creates a clean, simple image for screenprinting and allows the cotton cloth to act as the “materials” framed within the logo.

small use Logo

A secondary version of the logo with letters filled in can be used for smaller applications, such as name badges. Combining the small use logo with a supergraphic of the outline maintains the overall feel of the brand while prioritizing legibility.

video overlay

During breaks, event screens feature the logo overlaying footage of natural materials. This helps bring life and motion to the brand and builds excitement before each speaker or session.
